I picked this timer up a few days ago (so this is a preliminary review). The timer instructions on this GE product are much simpler than other digital timers that I've used. I needed a timer that could drive an automatic pet feeder (this one has on/off programmability so that's perfect). It programs in much the same way as any digital watch. Part of that programming does ask that you set the current sunrise/sunset times (but if you're not going to use the SunSmart features then that can just be ignored). I think this timer will work fine (feature review will deal with that) but I did find a possible bug where the timer 'off' event may not happen if the programs are put into the device out-of-order (for example, Program 1 might be for 5 AM, Program 2 might be for 3 AM, Program 3 may be for 7 AM) and in that case the unit did not shut off.
After I put my programs into it in order, the 'off' function worked as expected (by tomorrow I'll be 100% sure that fixed the problem) but, just a word to the wise. Otherwise, fine timer for the price (with 2 power ports as well and accepts up to 8 on/off programs). I picked this timer up a few days ago (so this is a preliminary review). Hands down the best digital timer with battery backup and sunrise/sunset I've ever found, and being able to trigger on/off/both using SunSmart is its best feature. However, it does have 3 minor-ish flaws which keeps it from getting 5 stars: 1) It's a bit clunky to program; 2) Random mode is +/-30min, and really needs a second or only option at +/-15min; 3) When you manually turn on, if Random mode is enabled it is switched off, at which point you have to remember to turn Random back on when done. // A little tip on programming, because time zones can be very wide, if sunrise/sunset triggering isn't quite the right time, try setting the timer's latitude/Zone either one up or one down, and that usually does the trick. Other way is to just simply offset the time by the amount needed.
